Growing the ICT industry in the Philippines
The mobile and cloud sectors in the Philippines are expected to experience explosive growth in 2012 as demand for mobile apps and cloud services increase. As smartphones become more affordable for the masses, local software developers foresee increased activity in the development of mobile software and apps. Local enterprises are also expected to adopt cloud computing for their business needs and industry players are anticipating an increase in cloud services.

Government support is seen as vital in order to achieve this growth figure. The Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) under the Department of Science and Technology has recently outlined various development programmes for the ICT industry, including talent development, Next Wave Cities, domestic industry and ICT-enabled creative industries development, and ICT marketing and research. The organisation has also launched a public-private partnership for ICT (iPPP) initiative to encourage collaboration between the government and private sector.

This year, ICTO will be leading a group of exhibitors including Advanced World Systems, Bayan Telecommunications, Globe Business, National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP), Sysnet Integrators and first-time exhibitors, Exist Global and Metchem Business Solutions / Robtek to CommunicAsia. They will be displaying the latest solutions at the Philippines Pavilion.

“Filipinos are among the most comfortable with technology in the region. Considering this, the Philippine government fully backs the ICT sector. We see the opportunity in the Asia-Pacific region and our participation in Asia’s most distinguished ICT and media communications event demonstrates this. The show is very relevant to the evolving ICT landscape in South East Asia and features current trends and topics such as mobile broadband, mobile commerce, next generation services and many others. CommunicAsia provides us an ideal platform to showcase our technological innovations as well as enhance business networks for Filipino companies abroad,” says Undersecretary Louis Napoleon Casambre, Executive Director, Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO), Department of Science and Technology.

Speaking at a CommunicAsia2012 media event held in Manila today, Mr. Stephen Tan, Chief Executive of Singapore Exhibition Services (SES) says, “Exhibitors from the Philippines will truly benefit from CommunicAsia, as it provides a stimulating environment where industry leaders, business professionals, and government decision-makers meet, network and form meaningful business relationships. CommunicAsia offers the scale and impact for businesses in the Philippines to reach out to potential buyers in the Asian region and beyond. With strong support and endorsement from over 20 leading trade organisations including the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), Asia-Pacific Satellite Communications Council (APSCC), the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines and the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF); both CommunicAsia and BroadcastAsia provide the most efficacious launch pad for our exhibitors to showcase the latest and best that technology has to offer.”

The last edition of CommunicAsia attracted over 1,300 companies from around the world and witnessed more than 1,300 Filipino trade attendees who came to source from and network with the large selection of exhibitors. Visitors were treated to a galore of global innovations which debuted at the event such as Huawei's MediaPad. Mobile application developers, satellite companies and cloud services were also a major hit with attendees.
